Meal Prepping for Dummies

In trying to accomplish my weight loss goal of 25 pounds, I realized I needed to take the nutrition portion of the weight loss equation more seriously. My biggest issue was finding time to cook healthy meals during the week. On days when I leave home at 8 am and return and 8 pm, I had no time to cook and I often found myself buying unhealthy food on the run. I had to stop making excuses and meal prepping was the solution. After watching Youtube videos and looking up ideas on Pinterest I took a stab at it, and honestly, meal prepping is the way to go.

25 Before 25: Part IV

16. Remove my tonsils

For as long as I can remember, I have had issues with my tonsils. When ever I got a cold I knew tonsillitis would soon follow. I got infections at least three times a year, and my doctor highly recommended I removed them. Life always got in the way, and to be honest, I was just genuinely afraid. The procedure requires full anesthesia, and everyone always scared me with their recovery stories. On the 8th of August, I had a tonsillectomy. I am still recovering (the reason I have not posted in a bit-I’m sorry). I’ve had some terrible days, but the worst is behind me, plus I lost 10 pounds so no complaints over here.

17. Upgrade Dee’s Boutique

I don’t remember if I mentioned this in a previous post, but I own a Boutique in Dominica. You can check us out on Facebook or Instagram. When I opened last Christmas, there was a lot of things I wanted to add that was not able to do before we opened. Before the one year anniversary of my store, my goal was to complete those things. I wanted to add security cameras and purchase a good point-of-sale system so I could better keep track of stock since I am not physically there. Thankfully, I was able to do both. If you live in Dominica, I am currently shopping for the creole festival season if there is something you would like to see in the store feel free to comment here or send me a DM on Instagram.

18. Visit a Museum

I remember as a child I spent most of my summers going to different museums in the city. If you grew up in NY, I am sure you have a picture in front of the whale at the American Museum of Natual History. I do not remember ever visiting a museum in my adult life, and I feel like I am missing out big time! Do you guys have any recommendations?

19. Have a picnic/brunch with friends

Life gets so busy, and time with family and friends sometimes fall through the cracks. I want to be more intentional about setting time aside for the people that matter most. That’s probably the thing I miss most about living in Dominica. In Dominica, families are always together. Be it a beach day or a spontaneous cook up after work. In the U.S we get so busy, but we should never get too busy for family and friends.

20. Take myself to dinner and a movie

I will be moving soon (all on my own to a city where I do not know anyone), and I really need to get back to being comfortable with going places by myself. I hardly ever go to the movies (what good movies are out now?),  and I rarely eat out, but I think this will be a good start.

My birthday is next month, and there is only one more part of this 25 before 25 series. There are still some things I have not done yet on my list, so I really need to get to work! What about you guys? Are you accomplishing the goals you set for yourself earlier?

Shoutout: Something new I am thinking of doing to recognize the great people in my life. So my first shout out goes to my best friend, Danielle. She has been a great source of encouragement for me this week. Every moment when I felt really down, she would send me a random text. Thank you, Danielle.

As always, thanks for reading.

Love,

Dee

B In Graduate School

If anyone knows me, they know I take school very seriously. Growing up in a Caribbean household, education was always given such importance. My mom always said, “Deeana your education will take you places, and no one can ever take your education away from you.” She is correct; however, I think throughout my matriculation I stressed myself out over things that are now irrelevant. As I reflect on my grad school experience, I distinctly remember the tears I cried when I got a B. Yes, I cried real tears. That experience taught me so much, so I decided to share four things getting a B in Grad school taught me.

  1. Check pride at the door

Honestly, it took me a very long time to tell anyone I got a B. I had gotten all A’s so far and everyone was so proud of me. I was low-key ashamed to tell my friends and family I got a B. No one had ever made me feel incompetent in the past for my grades, so it was all in my head. Honestly, your friends and family won’t think any less of you because of a B. My close friends always express how proud they are of me for going to school full time and working full time, they don’t care about my grades.

  1. Remember the end goal

The ultimate goal for me is to obtain a Master’s Degree. Will a B stop that from happening? No, it won’t. It’s that simple. When you are stressing just ask yourself that question. “Will this issue hinder me from accomplishing my end goal?” If the answer is no, dust off your shoulders and move on!

  1. It is ok to be confident, but it is better to be prepared

My career is in human resources, and I got a B in Human Resources Management. I was so convinced that this class would be a walk in the park because after all, I do this at work every day. The course was not easy, yet I did not prepare accordingly. I did not read as much as I should have and I did not devote enough time to the assignments. My confidence came as a stumbling block. I am now aware of the mistake I made and making mistakes are ok, just as long as I don’t make the same mistake twice.

  1. No one cares

As harsh as that sounds, at the end of the day, no one cares about your specific grades if you have your degree. Whenever my current manager asks about school she never once asked, “Hey, what grade did you get in your last class?” When I apply for jobs in the future, my resume will not include that one B. If you are in high school grades matter so much more, because your grades will determine the college you get accepted to and the funding you receive, but it’s so different in grad school. I had to remind myself that at the end of the day, no one cares so why stress?

Can any of you guys relate? I hope this post inspires those of you who are still in school to stress less about the small things.  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Keeping the Beaches Beautiful

A few years ago, you would not find me posting pictures in bathing suits, much less writing about it! A moment of silence for my personal growth in that area! Let me start off by saying the best accessory for your bathing suit is confidence. I wear whatever suit I have proudly. You will not find me constantly pulling to cover an area of my body I don’t like. The truth of the matter is I am a big girl. If that makes anyone uncomfortable, quite frankly that’s none of my concern. Girls of all shapes and sizes graciously slide in my DM’s to ask about my bathing suit, so I figured making a post about my favorite places to purchase bathing suits is a good idea. Here goes!

Forever 21

The first place I always look for bathing suits is Forever 21. They have a great plus size line. Because their suits are created with a plus size girl in mind the straps are a bit thicker, and the support is great. These bathing suits are also very affordable. I’ve never paid more than $30 for a Forever 21 suit.

Sure, many other people might have the same suit, but it’s all about how you rock it. I recently went to pool party, and I wore a Forever 21 bathing suit. At least five other women were wearing the same suit, but we all put our twist on it and looked great. We even took a group picture together!

Swimsuits for All

Swimsuits for All is an online store that has a broad range of bathing suits. They have suits starting at size 0. This website is where plus size designers such as Gabi Fresh and Ashley Graham launch their lines.

They have lots of fashion forward pieces and a such a huge variety. You are certain to find something that you like. The ticket price might appear a bit high, but you should always wait for the sales. I never buy anything on this website for full price. Their sales are good, sometimes as much as 70% off the entire site.

Asos

Asos has a curve size section, everyone knows this, right? But did you guys know they have a “big bust” section? In that part, they cater to the ladies who received an extra portion the “boob blessing.”

If you are looking for a high waist bathing suit, Asos is the place to look.  Asos also carries other brands so you could find a Monif C suite on there for a bit cheaper. If you are a student be sure to sign up for “unidays.” Unidays gives a  personalized coupon code for shopping on many web sites including Asos.

Eloquii

I have only purchased one bathing suit from Eloquii, but I suspect it will not be my last.

img_5025

The fit is perfect. This one came with straps, but I decided to go with the off-the-shoulder look. The description box is also helpful so be sure to check that before purchasing. This one ran small, so I knew to get a size up.

La Blanca

La Blanca is expensive. Being very transparent here, but I sign up with a new email every time I purchase from them to get that 15% welcome discount. The most I’ve ever spent on a bathing suit was from La Blanca, but it was worth it. Their suits hug you in all the right places, and the suit itself is well made. I also realized that it dries rather quickly…not a big deal to some but when you are running from the beach to your vehicle a dry swimsuit makes a big difference.

When Serena Williams announced her pregnancy via Snapchat, she was wearing a La Blanca suit. I had to have it. I was so tempted to post it in this post, but I am saving it for my upcoming birthday trip.

If you guys notice, I did not mention Ali express or any Instagram boutique. You get what you pay for with those options. I’ve purchased from that random store that always pops up on my Facebook feed, but it has always been a hit or total miss. I would recommend sticking to a trusted site. With trusted sites, it is also easy to return an item just in case it does not fit.

If I were a famous blogger, I would have had coupon codes for you guys…one day.  I hope you guys find this helpful. Please share with your girlfriends who are always looking for that perfect bathing suit.

Thanks for reading!

Love,

Dee

25 Before 25: Part III

11. A fast from social media

My name is Deeana, and I am addicted to social media. I spend way too much time refreshing Instagram and watching people lip sync to songs they do not know the words for on Snapchat.  I can easily spend an hour scrolling without realizing it. I understand that social media is a big part of our world, I mean you probably got a notification of this post via social media, but I have a lot more productive things I can do with my time. A fast will allow me to just take a break and enjoy other things that I once enjoyed before social media.
